Sears Children's Long Stockings: Fall-Winter Catalog Page 24

Figure 1.--This is one of the Sears pages offering long stockings in the Fall-Winter 1929-30 catalogs (page 19). Note the wide variety of stockings offered. And this was only one of the hosiery pages.

This is another page devoted to children's hosiery. The general heading is "Children's Winter Weight Hosiery". The hosiery offered is more varied than the other children's pages and include long stockings, biknee length socks for both boys and girls, anklets, and woolen socks for skating (for boys). There are both wool and part-wool hosiery.

Half Wool Long stockings : Fancy Ribbed with Double Tops (Top Left)

The ad copy read, "58 cents Postpaid. 86T2695--Black. 86T2696--Heather. 86T2697--French tan. 86T2698--French nude. Sizes 6 to 9 1/2 State size. We Pay the Postage. A fine warm stocking for boys and girls! We have not heard of any other offer to compare with this value. These are probably the best half wool stockings that money can buy! The makes of these stockings are famous the world over for doing excellent work. Their hose are always sized correctly, are always finished perfectly, are always certain to be good through and through. Their products are rarely if ever sold at such low prices. Only the tremendous quantity buying of our great store brings these to you for so little! The stockings are good, sturdy quality. Ribbed to the toe. Medium heavy weight. Double tops for greater protection. Snug, close fitting and warm, soundly reinforced in toes and heels." [Note that the boy in the illustration is wearing these stockings with above-the-knee knickers. Of course they could also be worn with short trousers.]

Popular Anklets (Bottom left)

Note that the term ankle socks is bot yet used. These anklets were done in two wool fabrics, one with rayon and the other with cotton. The ad copy reads, "Popular Anklets for boys and girls. New Popular Wool Anklets. [Illustration shows a younger boy wearing anklets with short trousers.] Anklets! The latest fashion! Seen everwhere. Worn not only for sports but for all around everday use. Children, women, misses, all have adopted this wonderful new style. No extra trouble to put on [i.e., no necessity for attaching garters]. Bright jolly colors and quiet tones for better dress. A little wool foot and a snug turndown ankle cuff that bring you just the extra warmth winter demands! Give your children this joyous, light-fotted freedom with real comfort besides! These anklets are both made of half wool yarns. They are of good sound construction, well reinforced, and dyed in fast colors. We believe these prices are much lower than you would generally pay for this quality. 49 cents Postpaid. About Half Wool and Half Rayon. 86T2810--Red, Peach, Nude, Blue, Nile green or Black and silver. Sizes 6 to 10 1/2. State size and color. We Pay the Postage. 45 cents Postpaid. About Half Wool, Balance Mercerized Cotton. 86T2811--Gray, Red, Blue or French tan. Sizes 6 6o 10. State size and color. We Pay the Postage. See Page 13 for other Winter Weight Stockings for Girls and Boys.

All Wool Heavy Weight Long Stockings (Top Right)

The ad copy read, "All Wool Heavy Weight. 69 cents Postpaid. For Boys or Girls. 86T2660--Black. 86T2661--Dark brown. 86T2662--Camel color. Sizes 6 to 9 1/2. State size. We Pay the Postage. Heavyweight all wool stockings made to give the utmost in warmth and service. Reinforced heels and toes. Finely knit, elastic ribbed legs. Flat knit feet. Fully seamless." [The boy wearing these winter-weight long stockings is shown with above-the-knee knickers.]

Sport Socks (Right Center)

It is not all together clear just wht kind of socks these are. They do not appear to be long stockings so I think they are best described as knee socks with red tops. The ad copy read, "48 cents Postpaid. Extra Heavy Weight for Boys. [These socks for skaters would probably be worn on top of ordinary long stockings or possibly with knickers. The illustration suggests that they came up to about mid-calf. It is suggested that they could be turned down over hightop shoes. A reader believes that, normally, regular long stockings would be worn underneath them. HBC is not convinced of this.] 86T2674--Light gray, red tops. Sizes 9 and 10. State size. We Pay the Postage. Ideal socks for skating or any winter sports. They are knit of all wool yarn, very warm and comfortable. Heavy ribbed legs with wide red stripe around the top. Can be worn as sports stockings, as the tops can be rolled to come over the tops of Hi-cut shoes. Flat knit seamless feet."

Part Wool--Knee Length (Bottom Center)

Note Sears uses the term "knee length" rater than "knee socks". The ad copy read," Part Wool--Knee Length. For Boys and Girls. [These are patterned knee socks with turnover cuffs, worn with knickers by the boy and with bare knees by the girl.] Part wool, warm, knee length hose, worn by so many thousands of American school children. Knit close fitting hose with the comfortable, real warmth of wool. Reinforced at toes and heels. Priced low to give you the greatest possible value. 42 cents Postpaid. Part Wool. 86T2804--Heather brown. 86T2805--Camel color. 86T2806--French tan. Knit of Rayon, mercerized cotton and a small amount of wool for warmth. Sizes: 7 to 10. State size. We Pay the Postage. 49 cents Postpaid. About One-Half Wool. 86T2809--Camel color, gray or French tan. State color. Knit of about one-half wool, balance mercerized, combed cottton. Sizes 7 to 10. State size." [N.B. There is apparently no extra elasticizing at the top to hold these knee socks in place. Boys and girls would have to wear round garters to hold them up. If not, they would slip down, which was one of the perennial problems of wearing knee socks during the late 1920s and 1930s.]

Mercerized Cotton Knee Socks (Bottom Right)

The ad copy read, "39 cents Postpaid. Mercerized Cotton. Knee Length. Good Looking Patterns. Heavyweight. 86T2806--Gray, French tan or Camel color. State color. Sizes: 7 to 10. State Size. We Pay Postage. Look at this! The outstanding style of knee length hose. We have never seen able to get as much highly desirable style and so much good sound value into hosiery at this price before! These stockings are fine quality mercerized cotton. These good looking patterns are yarn dyed. That means fast colors. The shades are chosen to match the suits, skirts and sweaters worn this winter. Toes and heels are thoroughly reinforced and the turnover cuff is double fabric. We feel that every single thing about this stockings is satisfactory.
