Sears Suits (Spring and Summer 1930)

Figure 1.--The Sears Spring and Summer catalog also offered many knickers both as individual pants and as suits. There were some short pants and long pants suits offered, but most of the suits were knicker suits.

Sears in its Spring and Summer catalog offered short pants, knickers, and long pants suits. From looking through the catalog, we observe that in 1930 both short pants suits and long pants suits take a back seat to knickers suits. There is not a lot of selection of short pants suits, and the ones that do appear are for younger boys (up until about 9 years of age) There are a fair number of shorts outfits for play, but short pants suits were considered, I think, more European, especially more English, than American. Some of the shorts are called "English shorts". The long pants suits were made for younger teenagers, but the appeal seems to be mainly to boys who are in their upper teens--17-19 years.

Short Pants Suits

Sears offered two short pants suits in the Spring-Summer catalog. They were for boys from 4-9 years of age. On the page a knickers suit was also offered for this age group. The rest of te page was devoted to invifiual pairs of shorts, some called "English shorts" and a button-pn short for boys up to 10 years.

Knicker Suits

The Sears Spring and Summer catalog also offered many knickers both as individual pants and as suits. The suits had single breasted jackets. Some of the suits had vests (waistcoats). The suits were sized by age--from 7 to 17/18 years. Some boys wore long trousers earlier than 17, but by 18 nearly all boys had switched to longies. Some suits came with two pairs of pants, both knickers. Some other companies offered the second pair as long pants.

Long Pants Suits

The Sears catalog also offered long pants suits. There were five different long pants suits. They were offered on a page with knickers suits. Like the other suits in the catalog, they were all single=breasted suits. The illustrations depict older teenagers wearing the longpants suit. Actually there were not a great difference in the long pants and knicker suits depicted together. The long pants suits were made in sizes down to age 10 years.
