Macy's Storm Coat (Spring-Summer 1940)

Figure 1.-- We notice a 1940 Macy's spring and summer catalog page with headwear and rain coats. The items are mostly for girls, but there are a few items for boys as well. The only rain coat is called a storm coat. This was the standard rain coat for children during the 1930s-50s. It was a rubberized coat. These were offered by Macy's in navy and yellow.

We notice a 1940 Macy's spring and summer catalog page with headwear and rain coats. The items are mostly for girls, but there are a few items for boys as well. The only rain coat is called a storm coat. This was the standard rain coat for children during the 1930s-50s. It was a rubberized coat. Mine were always done in black in the late-40s and early-50s. These were offered by Macy's in navy and yellow. Funny, I don't recall the yellow ones. It is presented as a boys' style here. I don't recall just what the girls wore on rainy days when I was in school at this age. Macy's here offered the coats in pre-scgool and 1st grade sizes, but they were widely worn by school age boys as well at the elementary (primary) school level. Production of these coats may have been affected by Wotld War II. After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor (1941), America faced a serious rubber shortage. The Macy's ad copy read, "L22P--Little Boys' Storm Coat of rubberized shower-resistent fabric. Slash pockets. Hat to match. Safety-yellow or navy. Sizes 2, 4, 6x. (Ship. wt. 4 lns.) Set ---2.77." Npte the clasp closings. Galoshes were done with the same closings.
