Sears Fall and Winter Hosiery--Junior Size Socks (1942-43)


Figure 1.--Seas offered some styles especially for younger boys. The Sears ad copy read, "Junior size Socks for the little fellows ... knit smaller throughout." These junior socks were for a somewhat different size range, hosiery sizes 7-9 or 9½. That youd be a full size lower and not the larger sizes. While the sizes are different, the styles seem quite similar to those made for the older boys.

Boot Socks

The Sears ad copy read, "Boot Socks. 40% wool. 29 c. Pr.; 3 prs 85 c. Warm rib-knit leg, smooth flat knit foot. 40% wool, 30% cotton, 30% rayon ... cotton reinforced heels, toes. Bright stiped top. Shpg wt., pair, 4 oz. Colors: blue, green, red. Sizes: 7, 8, 9. State size and color. 43 D 6954."

Knee Socks

The Sears ad copy read, "Knee Socks. All Cotton. 25 c. Pr.; 3 prs 73 c. Golf socks, knit small throughout. Good quality cotton . . . with snug- fitting ribbed top that clings to the leg. 2-ply heels and toes add wear. Shpg wt. pair, 3 oz. Colors: blue, brown, green. Sizes 7, 7 1/2, 8, 8 1/2, 9, 9 1/2. State size and color." The fact that here we see on pair of kneesocks in contrat to two pairs ofankle socks is a indicator that by the earlt 1940s that ankle socks were becoming the princile hosiery worn by American boys, especially as this was from a Fall-Winter catalog.

Ankle Socks: Bright Blazers

The Sears ad copy read, "Bright blazers. 14 C Pr.; 3 prs 40 c. ... in short style socks. Made of ingrain cotton yarns. Snug-fitting tops. Shpg. wt. pr, 3 oz. Colors: blue, brown, green. Sizes: 7, 7 1/2, 8, 8 1/2, 8, 9 1/2. State size and color. 43 D 6848."

Plain Short (ankle) Socks

The Sears ad copy read, "Plain short Socks 19 c. Pr.; 3 prs. 55 c. Bargain. Soft mercerized cotton knit . . . with gaily striped snug fitting top. Shipping wt., pr. 3 oz. Colors: blue, brown, green. Sizes 7, 7 1/2, 8, 8 1/2, 9, 9 1/2. State size and color wanted. 43 D6849"
