American Mail Order Catalogs with Boys Clothings: Garments--Coats

Figure 1.--.

American mail order catalogs offer a very view of the styles and garments overtime to help us view changing fashion trends. Some coat styles were gender neutral while others were more clearly styled for either bots and girls. Varius terms in the 19th century were used for coats, including coat, jacket, and cloak. There does not seem to have been clear differences in the use of these terms in mail order catalogs. The use in 20th century catalogs becomes more refined.

Misses and Children's Coats

Coats were made for girls in the 1880s. Along with the misses' (girls') suits were "children's suits". Often the term children was used to mean boys and girls. Some catalogs, however appear to have used children to mean eith younger boys or girls.
