Manufacturers of Boys' Clothing: Stubbies (Australia)

Figure 1.-- Here is some of Stubbies line od schoolwear. Note the brightly colored school shirts, one done in the Rugby style. I'm not sure about the date of this advertisement, probably about 1990.

We do not know a lot about Stubbies yet. It was a brand of school and other children's clothes, but now offers cassual men's wear as well. Some of our Australian readers have mentioned Stubbies to us. Stubbies in Australia is a term used to mean short pants or bottles of beer. I am not sure if this usage appeared before or after the company. The brand and the name of the company is the same. Hopefully our Australian readers can tell us more. One Australian reader writes, "Stubbies are a great brand in Australian schoolboy shorts and trousers and sports uniforms. I wore Stubbies as a schoolboy at St Mark's Primary in Port Pirie 'South Australia. They were basic school grey shorts with a fully elasticated waist. They came in grey or pearl grey in cotton'polyester rayon and terylene."

The Company

We do not know a lot about Stubbies yet. The company was founded in 1972. The company was iniytially Edward Fletcher which came out with with a line of short cut short pants. It was decided to call them Stubbies. The fashion of the time was the short style. These shorts became so popular that the company eventually changed its name. Styles have changed and short-cut classic Stubbies no longer appeal to Australian boys. The company does, however, make classic Stubbies for aduklts. It was a brand of school and other children's clothes, but now offers cassual men's wear as well. Some of our Australian readers have mentioned Stubbies to us. The company describes itself as offering "quality garments to the schoolwear, sportswear and menswear industry". The company goes on to describe its business, "The core objectives behind the design and development process for all products within the Stubbies range are: + Value for Money, + Quality, + Practicality, + Durability, + Design, and + Innovation. Stubbies is proud to offer a wide range of schoolwear, sportswear and casual menswear, that can be worn for all occasions. Stubbies has earned a superior reputation for over more than 30 years, through always offering the best and then delivering the best to the Australian market."
