Historical Girls' Clothing: Countries--Denmark

Danish girl dresses
Figure 1.--This 1924 photograph shows Danish children playing in an alley in a villge on Klholm (Kjolholm/ Kjlholm). This is an island near Copenhagen. Two of the girls wear pinafores. The image is from an early 20th century collection of photographs by collaborating photographers Valdemar Rordam, Ernst Klein, Theodor Caspari and Johannes Ohquist. This historic and beautiful photographic collection documents the people, traditions, cities and landscapes of Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland.

We do not yet have much information in Danish fashions gender trends. Our Danish archive is very limited making it impossible to go very deeply into the topic. Denmark is a very small country and thus will not have a photographic record like the larger countriesfor wjoch we have substatial archives. Denmark borders Germany to the south. As best we can tell, German children's clothing for both boys and girls were similar to German styles, at least popular styles in northern Germany. We do not see soutern/Alpine styles like Lederhosen for boys. We also do not know much about girls' styles. We are not sure, for exmple, about the dirndl. Hopefully as we acquire more images, we can begin to assess gender trends.
