American Girls Dresses: The 1840s--Prevelence

American 1840s century girls dresses
Figure 1.--This 1840s Dag shows three teenage sisters (possibly two teenagers and mother) wearing similar fashionable dresses and molded hair styles. Bitice the shirt sleeves. Whatever the style, it is dresses that dominate 1840s girls clothing in the portraiture.

Dresses appear in the photographic record to be the primary garments worn by girls. We see fewer girls wearing blouses and skirts. Of course this may mean that girls dressed up for the portrait. Blouses and skirts may have been more prevalent for everyday wear, but this is difficult to asssess because almost all of the photography is studio photography. And the 1840s studio portraits we have found mostly show the girls wearing dresses rather than blouses and skirts. We are still assessing this matter as our archive grows. The portrait on the previous page shows a young girl with a simple dress. Another early Dag shows three teenage sisters wearing similar fashionable dresses and molded hair styles (figure 1). Whatever the style, it is dresses that dominate 1840s girls clothing in the portraiture.
