Individual American Orphanages: Tressler Orphan Home

Figure 1.--This is a photograph of the boys' band at the Tressler Orhan's Home in 1909. This was very common at American orphanages.

We know very little sbout the Tressler Orphan Home. We know it was located in Loysville, Pennsylvania. It was founded at the end of the Civil War in a former school. David L. Tressler built a three=story brick building for a college (1855-56). When the Civil Broke out, Tressler accepted a capitancy and the male students volunteered toi serve under him (1862). After the War, the school was converted into one of the fitst orphanages for the children od soldiers killed in the War (1865). [Hain] Luteran officials peitioned Perry County courts to issue a charter for the Tressler Orphan's Home of the Evangelical Church Luheran Church of the United States of America. The Court granted the charter (1868). The orphanage cared for both church and soldier's orphans. The State of Pennsylvania appropriated funds for the care of children orphaned by the War. The orphanage thus received state finding. One reports suggest the orphanage closed in 1892, but this may be when state funding ended. We note the orphange was operaring as late as 1938. Like many orphanages, there was a boys' band. Loca churches also supported the orphanage with food and other donations. A boys' band was organized at the orphanage and proved to be a popular activity. This was very common at American orphanages.
