Clothes at American Orphanages

Figure 1.--Although the photograph is not clear, the boys in this classroom shot wear identical work jackets and pants and heavy boots. This photograph looks to be taken about 1920.

This ColoradoInstitution was in fact an orphanage, but they also took children whose parents were still alive but could not care for their children. I'm not sure when it was founded, but the boys appear to wear a uniform of rough working clothes as everyday clothes. They wear matching jackets and trousers. The jackets button at the collar. Other photographs show the boys wearing lighter shirts with suspenders under their jackets.
