English Children's Periodicals: The Captain

Figure 1.--This World War I "Captain" magazine from February 1915, very early in the War, has a suitably patriotic cover. Note the Allied (English, French, and Italian) scout uniforms. Note that the Russians who undoubtedly saved France in 1914 are not included. The Americans were not yet in the War. The illustrator was M.R. Whitwell.

The Captain was a monthly magazine. I'm not sure when it was founded, but believe it was about 1899. It's primary claim to fame among these magazine were regular articles by P G Wodehouse. The Captain wasn't precisely an annual. Most are half-yearly editions made up of six monthly issues. The monthly issues of the magazine were bound together for the annuals, minus the ads.

World War I

This World War I "Captain" magazine from 1915 has a suitably patriotic cover. Note the Allied (English, French, and Italian) scout uniforms. Note that the Russians who undoubtedly saved France in 1914 are not included. It is interesting to speculate why this might be. We know that there was a Russian Scout movement. It was founded in 1909. It was much smaller than the British, French, or Italian Scout movement, but it did exist. We believe that they were not included because Allied war propaganda was aimed at painting the War as the defense of democracy by the democracies against the authoritative German and Austrian Empires. This was very important in the effort to draw America into the War. The absolutist Rusian Empire headed by the Tsar hardly fitted into the image that the Allies wanted to portray. It was of course the Russians that payed the greatest price of any country in lives lost nd the final Allied victory would not have been possible without them.
