Soviet Children's Books: The Singer's Friends

Figure 1.-- The boy lying on the sofa is wearing a blue pullover sweater over a white collared shirt, dark short trousers, and heavily ribbed brown long stockings, again with a bodice and hose supporters. Once more the clothing illustrated seems to be an accurate reflection of the 1960s. This is often the case when the illustrator is depicting contemporary fashions. Source: George Michael collection.

Symoh Garin wrote The Singer's Friends. The book was published in 1963. A Russian contributor tells us, " 'The Singer's Friends' is about the importance of music in a child's life. When a boy sings, he has many friends that are actually in the music itself. In the book a little boy falls asleep and has a dream. In the dream some sheet music starts to come alive and the notes become tiny people. The whole world of music comes alive to represent harmony, songs, and the like. The dream speaks to the little boy to make him realize that his whole being, his personality, his body, etc. is like music--full of beauty, melody, and harmony." We have been able to find no information about the author. The illustrations are by Theodor Lemkul. We have also been unable to find information about the illustrator. Nor do we know about the story line yet.
