Buttoning Conventions: Diagonal Styling

boys blouse diagonal buttoning
Figure 1.--Here we see three children, peresumasnly siblings. They look to be about 6-12 years old. The two boys war uidentical button-on outfits with small white collars. The tops which may be called blouses are done with diaginal-style button closures extending to the shouklder. Long pants were were still very common for schoo-ahe boys. The CDV portrait was probabkly taken around 1869. Their sister wears a plain dress.

Diagonal closures are the rarest of the three options. We only see them on boys' blouses and tunics. We see a number of these, especailly the tunics. We have not noted adult men wearing shirts with diaginal button closings. We only see this being used on boys blouses and tunics. So far, most of the examples we have found are American. We are unsure if this reflects our larger American arcvhive or if it was truly a largely American style. We are still assesing this. It also appears to have only been popular for a relatively short period. Almost all of the examples we have found are from the 1870s.
