Fashion Publications and Children's Fashions: Austrian Publications--Masche

Figure 1.--This vest (waistcoat) and short pants outfit appeared in a 1951 issue of "Masche". We suspect that the pattern offered by the magazine was for the rather natty plais vest (waistcoat) and not the short pants shown with it.

A HBC reader has mentioned Masche. At this time we know very little about the magazine. It was an Austrian sewing magazine for woman with patterns and suggestions about sewing anmd knitting clothes. Itwas no specially focused on children's clothes, but did include a lot of information on children's outfits. It was first published in 1945. We have information through 1955, but I do not know about its current status. We note in the 1050s that there were a lot of knitting patterens for younger boys. We also note a lot of sweater patterns. For the outfit shown here, we suspect that the pattern offered by the magazine was for the rather natty plais vest (waistcoat) and not the short pants shown with it. The German word for vest is "Weste" so Americans seem to use the German word rather than the English word.
