Russian Fashion Publications: Individual Titles

Figure 1.--"Moda Leta" ("Fashion of the Summer") is a Russian fashion magazine. These don't look much like DSummer fashions. The magazine contained fashions for both children and adults. The children's fashions included both play and dress up garments, the adult fashions seem almost entirely dressy garments and outfits without casual garments.

HBC at this time has very limited information on specific Russian fashion magazines. Our Russian readers have provided some limited information. Fashion in the Soviet Union was a curious concept. On one had the Soviets wanted to show that they were not behind the times. On the other hand, in s worler's paradisde, fashion was seen by some as a hoplessly bourgeois concept, perhs[s not counter revolutionary, but not quite in keeping with the ethos of the Soviet state. The fashion maazines we have found seemn to have focused on high fashion and not the garments thst workers would have worn. Wldso do notknow wjhatthe press runs were for these publications and how weidely disdtriuted they were.

The Children Clothes Fashions

This magazine was titled The Children Clothes Fashions. At this time we have no information on its publishing history. We do not know when it began publishing or when it ceased publishing. A Russians reader has provided some images from 1975 and 1981 issues. One matter that is not clear to us is the extent to which the garments displayed in the magazine were actually on sale in Soviet stores. Some mothers may have used the styles for home sewing, but I do not think that these are advertisements for sewing. Hopefully our Russian readers will privide us some information here.

Knitting

The Russians believevin very basic titles. The knitting pagazine was simply called "Knitting". We know nothing about the magazine at this time. It contained knitting fashions, presumably with patterns or advertisements for patterns. All we know for sure was that the magazine was being published in the 1980s.

Moda Leta

"Moda Leta" ("Fashion of the Summer") is a Russian fashion magazine. It contained fashions for both children and adults. The children's fashions included both play and dress up garments, the adult fashions seem almost entirely dressy garments and outfits without casual garments. We are not entirely sure just what oer\ganizational theme used to organize the children's clothing on the various pages. Perhapos they were submissins from the various sewung factories. Curiously despite the title, the catalog is full of coats and other cold-weather garments. The magazine was published in 1937 by the People Commissariate of Light Industry (NKLP), Department of sewing. Sewing factories apparently submitted models. The magazine included very fashionable garments illustrated. The styles would not have looked out of place in Paris. They were not, however, fashions that many many Soviet citizens would have worn. We do not know how regularly Moda Leta was published. All we have at this time is a single 1937 summer issue.
