French Postcards: Blouses

Figure 1.--This French boy on a 1938 postcard wears a blouse with slightly puffed sleeves and a wide scallooped collar with what look to be grey shortpants and kneesocks and black oxfords.

Postcards in the 1930s often show boys wearing blouses with short pants and white kneesocks. The blouses are normally white, often with large white collars. Front buttoning styles were the most common, but back buttoning styles were also worn, Some of the sleeves might be slightly puffed, but not in a pronounced way like girls' dresses. Strap shoes were also commonly depicted. Button-on blouses were common. The blouse the boy wears here is a front buttoning blouse with a large scalloped collar. He wears it without a bow which was common in these cards. The card is dated to 1938. It seems like an outfit that a child might worn duringbthe summer to go to church. This boy looks to be about 8, but the HBC reader who provided the image reports that boys up to about 12 years of age might have worn blouses like this in the 1930s.
