World War I (1917-18)

Figure 1.-- The photographs begin in 1915, although a few may be a year or two ealier. World War I in Europe had begun the year before. America was still at peace, but entered the War in 1917. The result was a patriotic outburst. We see Howard wearing a tunic suit and his tricycle festooned with flags and red, white, and blue bunting.

The result was a patriotic outburst. We see Howard wearing a tunic suit and his tricycle festooned with flags and red, white, and blue bunting (figure 1). The wheels seem to have cards which created a great racket when the trike was peddled. I don't remember fixing my trike like that, but I sure did my bike in the 1950s. I am not sure they are playing cards. Many American families in the 1910s didn't allow playing cards in the hime and certainly did not see them as suitable for clothing. A compnion photograph shows him wearing a sailor suit with his trike and sisters Margaret and Helen (figure 2). This was probably taken a year or two later. Note that the girls have baby buggies rather than trikes. They are also decorated with patriotic flags and bunting. All the patriotic regalia suggests to us that the photographs were taken during the War, but given Howard's age here it could have been just before the War. We nore Howard at college/university in 1923 so 1917 seems a bit unlikely for the snapshot here. It could be an earlier 4th of July photograph. We are not sure where these snapshots were taken, but it does not look like the Montclair New Jersey house, although it could be the back of the house.
