Vintage American Velvet Sailor Suit: Garments--Dickey

Figure 1.--Here is the dickey for the suit. Notice the four button holes and the two buttons. There was also tie strings at the bottom ythat went around the waist.

Sailor suits were generally made with dickies that were detaoled in various ways. Often they were removable, so the tops couold be worn without them in warm weather. The removable dickey here had embroidered detailing and was done in the same burgandy velvet fabric. Often the dickey was done in a contrasting material. Note the dickey has four button holes. We assume that there would have been buttons on the inside of the sailor top that it buttoned on to. Yhere were also two buttons that would have went into button holes on the inside of the top. In addition there was a string tie at the bootom that went around the waist. It seems like it would be difficult for a bnoy to put on the dickey by himself. Once on, however, it was securely on. We think not all dickies were as involved as this one.
