Austrian Royalty: Countess (Archduchess) Hedwig (1896- )

Figure 1.--This birthday portrait of Archduchess Herwig was taken in 1966. We are not sure just who the individuals are.

We notice a family portrait of Countess Hedwig zu Stolberg's (former Archduchess of Austria) on the occassion of her 70th birthday in 1966. She was photographed with her adult children their spouses and her grandchildren. This is a major Hapsburg family photograph, but we are not sure yet how Countess Hedwig fits into the Hapsburg royal family. Hopefully one of our readers will provide some information about the Countess. A reader tells us that she is a daughter of Gisela, a daughter of Sissi of Bavaria--the wife of Austro-Hungarian Emperor Franz Joseph. We can not yet confirm this. To our knowledge Princess Gisela haf four children, none of them named Hedwig. Perhaps Hedweg was her husband's name. At any rate this requires more investigation. Another reader tells us, "Archduchess Hedwig (1898-1970) was the wife of Bernhard Count zu Stolberg-Stolberg. She was the daughter of Franz Salvator of Austria-Toskana and Marie Valerie, daughter of Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria. The Stolbergs had 9 children.
