Figure 1.--This 1916 photograph shows Prince Bertil and Princess Ingrid Victoria with their mother. Bertil appears to be wear a fancy tunic suit with short pants, short whire socks and strap shoes.

Bertil Gustaf Oscar was born in 1912. He was the fourth child of future King Gustav VI. HBRC is unable at this time to find much information about the prince, but some available information provides information about the his childhood clothing. The Swedish princes were fairly close in age. The clothes Prince Beril worn are probably similar to those worn by his older brothers when they were Bertil's age.

Parents

Rince Bertil's father was future King Gustav VI Adolf. His mother was the future Queen Margaret. His mother was the future Queen Margaret, a grand daughter of British Queen Victoria. Margaret was the child of British Prince Arthur William Patrick and Princess Louise Margaret of Prussia. Prince Arthur was reportedly Queen Victoria's favorite son. This is one of the many examples of the extent to which Queen Victoria became the Grandmother of Europe.

Family

Prince Bertil had three brothers and one sister:
Gustav Adolf (1906-1947): Gustav Adolf was the crown prince, but died in 1947 before his father assumed the throne. His son Carl Gustaf in herited the throne when his grandfather died in 1973.
Sigvard Oscar Fredrik (1907- ): (Count of Wisborg),
Ingrid Victoria (1910- ):
Bertil Gustaf Oscar (1912-97): Prince Bertil himself was the four child.
Carl Johan Arthur (1916- ): Carl became Count of Wisborg on the death of his older brother.

Childhood

Prince Bertil was born in 1912. HBRC has no information on the children's childhood. Available photographs suggest that they had a happy childhood and enjoyed each other's company.

Figure 2.--Prince Bertil is seen here at about 5 years of age. He appears to be a button on shorts set with a plain open-collar blouse and long shorts. He wears long white stockings and buckle shoes.

Childhood Clothing

Photographs from the 1910s show that the princes wore dresses until about 4 years old when they appear in tunics. Beril here wears a long-sleeved back buttoning dress with a belt. Dressy footwear was strap shoes. The boys than wore long short pants. I'm not sure about the hosiery. The younger children wear short white socks. They probably wore long dark stockings in the winter. The younger children wore floppy white sun hats for play. One of the older boys wore a kind of Australian bush hat.
