English School Uniform: Individual Schools--Duddley Grammar School Form 1A

Figure 1.--This photograph shows form 1A of Dudley Grammar School in 1947-48. The boys wear similar colored short pants suits, many with open collars.

Boys at Dudley grammar school in the 1940s all appear to be wearing similar colored suits. Several boys wear double breasted suits. They do not appear to be blazers. There are no school badges on their coat jackets. Available photographs show what looks like all of the boys wearing short pants and kneesocks. The uniformity of their uniforms suggests that it was a school rule. We do not not know at this time what the rule was for the other forms. A few boys do not have ties and wear rather sporty open collar shirts. More boys have ties than was the case of form 1C. Boys wearing open collar shirts were not common in te 1950s, but may have been more common during te 1940s. HBC is not sure why this more informal style was worn at Dudley, perhaps it was the influence of World War II.

Figure 2.--Most of the boys in this 1948 photograped war ties. A few boys have open collars and one boy wears a buttoned collar without a tie.

Form 1A

Form 1 were the new entrants at the school who had just moved up from their primary school. Most of these boys would still be age 11. Some schools numbered the form in terms of their academic ability. Thus form 1A might be the top form. It is unclear what the practice was a Duddley.

Uniform

Boys at Dudley grammar school form 1A all appear to be wearing similar colored suits. Several boys wear double breasted suits. They do not appear to be blazers. There are no school badges on their coat jackets. Many boys wear sweaters. None of then have the colored rim that was to become so common. A photograph of form 1A shows what looks like all of the boys wearing short pants and kneesocks. The uniformity of their uniforms suggests that it was a school rule. We do not not know at this time what the rule was for the other forms. As was the case of many Scottish schools, a few of the boys do not have ties and wear rather sporty open collar shirts. This was much less common in England. HBC is not sure why this more informal style was so prevalent in Scotland. One boy wears a jumper with school colored trim at the collar. HBC is not sure just when the jumpers with the school colre trim first appeared. This is one of the earliest examples of such garments that HBC had, but they have appeared even earlier. Some boys appear to wear plain turn-over-top kneesocks, but many boys wear kneesocks with a colore band at the cuff. More Form 1A boys wear the kneesocks with the colored bands than the form 1C boys. Most boys wear Oxford low-cut shoes, but one boy wears old-fashioned high-top shoes.

Figure 3.-- Boys look to be wearing kneesocks with the same colored bands at the top. Some boys seem to have one band while only one colored band, while other boys have two. But this could be just how the boys were wearing them.

Suits

Boys at Dudley grammar school form 1A all appear to be wearing similar colored suits. Several boys wear double breasted suits. While the greater mumber of boys wear single breasted suits. It is difficult to identify the suit type that some boys are wearing, but clearly several boys are wearing double breasted coats. They do not appear to be blazers. There are no school badges on their coat jackets.

Ties

As was the case of many Scottish schools, a few of the boys do not have ties and wear rather sporty open collar shirts. This was much less common in England. HBC is not sure why this more informal style was so prevalent in Scotland.

Sweaters

Many boys wear sweaters. None of then have the colored trim that was to become so common. One boy wears a jumper with school colored trim at the collar. HBC is not sure just when the jumpers with the school colre trim first appeared. This is one of the earliest examples of such garments that HBC had, but they have appeared even earlier.

Short pants

A photograph of form 1A shows what looks like all of the boys wearing short pants and kneesocks. The shorts appear for the most part to be rather long knee-length shorts. The uniformity of their uniforms suggests that it was a school rule. We do not not know at this time what the rule was for the other forms.

Kneesocks

Some boys appear to wear plain turn-over-top kneesocks, but many boys wear kneesocks with a colored band at the cuff. More Form 1A boys wear the kneesocks with the colored bands than the form 1C boys. Boys look to be wearing kneesocks with the same colored bands at the top. Some boys seem to have one band while others have two bands. HBC is not positive that there are two styles or if it is how the boys are wearing them. Like the jumper with the colored, HBC is not sure when socks with the colored trim first appeared.

Shoes

Most boys wear Oxford low-cut shoes, but one boy wears old-fashioned high-top shoes.

Figure 4.--The form master of Form 1A is shown here in his academic robes..

Form Master

The form master for Form 1A is dressed much more formally than the Form 1C form master who wore his Scout uniform. The Form 1A form master is dressed much more formally. It was very common for grammar school masters in the late 1940s to wear acadenic gowns like this form master. This is one of many examples of grammar schools basically following the example of the public schools.
