English School Uniform: Duddley Grammar School, 1951

Figure 1.--Duddley boys in 1951 wear two styles of uniform. Some boys wear coat jackets and other boys wear darker colored blazers.

Boys at Dudley grammar school in the 1951 look to be wearing a variety of outfits. In fact the school is beginning to implement a brand new uniform. Some boys in 1951 are beginning to wear blazers for the first time. The boys wear jackets and ties, although many boys are wearing darker colored school blazers. None of the boys have open collars as was the case in the 1940s. A few of the form 3 boys in 1951 were wearing short trousers. It is likely that they were required in forms 1 and 2. None of te boys wears double breasted suits. All of the boys wear ties. The open colared style is no longer permitted.

Post-war Britain

Some photographs are avaialble from the late 1940s and early 1950s. At the time, the United Kingdom (UK) was still devastated from World War II. A HBC reader reports, "I was in the UK in 1947 and clothing was still being rationed. Although the Brits had prevailed in the War, it was a more accurate description that they had survived. Economically they had paid a huge price. Britain was hugely in debt. The process of losing their empire had begun. The post-war years were very difficult. It took about 10 years after the War before some type of normacly prevailed in Britain." Rationing continued in England long after the War into the early 1950s.

Forms

English schools like English schools organized the school into forms. The new entrants were form 1. Presumably the senior boys were form 6, however HBC has no details on the school at this time.

Figure 2.--Dudley Grammar School in 1951 was changing the uniform from a suit to a school blazer. Note several boys wearing the new darker colored blazers with the school badge.

Form 1

No information is available on the form 1 uniform, but like the form 1 boys in 1948, they presumably ha short trouser uniform.

Form 2

No information is available on the form 2 uniform, but as several form 3 boys wear sort trousers, they were probably required for te fiorm 2 boys.

Form 3

Some information is available on form 3 at Duddley in 1951. The boys all wear jackets and ties, although they appear to be different colors. None of te boys have open collars as was the case in the 1940s. Some of the form 3 boys in 1951 were wearing short trousers.

None of then have the colored trim that was to become so common. Some of the boys wear short trousers. As most do not, they appear to be optional, ubless tere was some kind of age or eight rule instead of a form rule. The school does appeared to have required the boys wearing shorts to wear kneesocks. There are different kinds of kneesocks, some plain and some with ciolored top bands. Boys wear different colored bands on teir kneesocks. This may have been part of the uniform change along with the new blazers.

Figure 3.--All the boys wearing short trousers at Duddley wear kneesocks, but the types of kneesocks varied.

Ties

The boys in 1951 are all wearing buttoned collar and ties. This contrasts with the school uniform in 1948 when boys were allowed to wear open-collared shirts if they desired to do so. By 1951, hwever, all the boys were required to wear ties. HBC is not sure when the change was made. The open-collared may just have been a War-time measure that had continued through the late-1940s. Although it is difficult to make out, all the boys appear to be wearing solid-colored ties.
