Individual English Schools: Euston Fellowship Society (about 1930s)

Figure 1.--We notice a press photo that we do not fully understand. It is about the Fellowship Society of Euston which has "introduced many novel ideas for the children's education". They apparently operated an open-air school. The photograph shows an open-air class for boys. The boys are all working at desks. One youngster is taking a rest. Presumably he wasn't feeling well. There is a tent in the background which looks like a classroom.

Presumably the teacher moved them out into the open on nice days, but their classroom is right their for a refuge when it started to rain. I'm not sure what they did in the winter. Notice the way the boys are dressed. You can tell it was not a very warm day. The photograph is undated, but looks to have been taken in the late-1920s or early 30s. We have been unable to find any information on the Fellowship Society of Euston. Euston is a suburb of London. Nor do we know why the children her did not attend a state primary school. I thought that they might be poor children, but a British reader tells us, "I think that this school was for delicate children. It was thought that lots of fresh air would benifit such children. It was for this reason that many towns had an open air school in a 'countryside' setting--often the municipal public park. I think this is such a school."
