The Alderwood Primary School was one of the new primary schools opened in the 1950s and 60s following the school reforms of the 1940s. The new school building was opened in 1952 although children began attending in 1951. The school is located in Greenwich (London) and was built on the site of a wood of Alder trees giving the school its name. The architects were part of the team who designed the Festival of Britain. The building is a good example of the modern-style building constructed in the 1950s. The building on its opening contained separate Infant and Junior schools. The two schools were merged into the present primary school in 1966. Here we see a class at Alderwood Primary School durung the 1954-55 year. This was one of the first classes at the school.
