English Primary Schools: School Uniform Chronology--The 1980s

Figure 1.--The primary school here in the 1970s did not have a uniform, but in the 1970s adopted one requiring the boys to wear short trousers and kneesocks. This was the 4th year juniors or the oldest children at the school in 1982-83.

Quite a number of schools in the 1970s and 80s had simple uniforms. They were much less elaborate than the state primary schools. Schools varied as to the strictness of the uniform regulastions. As can be seen here there was a uniform requirement, but it was not a strict oner as the children wear a variety of uniform items. Some schools did have blazers, usually the Anglican schools. Most boys wore short pants to primary schools in the 1960s. By the 1970s many of the older boys began wearing long pants. Some schools having uniforms required the boys to wear short pants. Each school had its own unifom regulsations or dress code. The primary school here in the 1970s did not have a uniform, but in the 1970s adopted one requiring the boys to wear short trousers and kneesocks.
