French School Uniform:  20th Century--Post-war Era Berets (1945-69)

Figure 1.--THis image was taken after school of children playing. It was taken in the 1950s, but probably not in Paris. Berets were no commonly worn by Parisian boys in the 1950s.

Berets largely disappeared after World War II. They did not disappear entirely. Even by the early 1950s boys might wear them in rural areas. They were not common, however, in Paris. The principal exception were the Scouts. Berets were worn as part of Scout uniforms. They also might have been worn at a few private schools. We note that many English girl's schools adopted the beret as part of their uniform. We know that French boys no longer were wearing berets, we are not sure about French girls.
