French Schools Events: Occassions--Unknown Holiday Celebrations

Figure 1.--Here some French CE1 students are celebrating what is presumably some sort of holiday in 1960. We are not sure what the holiday is, but the trees tell us that it was in the spring or summer. The image is marked Paul Langevin, the name of the school.

We note children celebrating some kind of occassion, but we are not sure just what the celebration is. Christmas events are usully easy to figure out from the trappings. Other holidaysare not quite so obvious. Perhaps our French readers will be able to identify the images we have archived.

Here some French CE1 students are celebrating what is presumably some sort of holiday in 1960 (figure1). We are not sure what the holiday is, but the trees tell us that it was in the spruing or summer. The image is marked Paul Langevin, the name of the school. A reader writes, "The image was most likly taken in the summer, I'd say July. The trees are covered in leaves. The grass is quite long and there is a heat haze on the photograph. A celebration of flowers perhaps." Another reader believes it night be the end of the school year celebration. A French reader tells us, "I think this 1960 photograf was taken the day of the "Fête des écoles" That was celebrated about July 8-10. Except for their white shirt, these boys are dressed like they would for regulr school days. Normaly dressed but with floral arcade, they had probably done a little pageant in front of their parents and officials. The French class CE1 is the second grade; the children must be 7 years old in December, and thus some can be 8 years old in July. During the 'Fête des écoles" the children are happy, because it is the end dof the school, it is the fête, and this day the teachers are very kind."
