Individual French Schools: Unidentified School (1953)

Figure 1.--Here we see a class at an unidentified French school. All we know for sure is that the photograph was taken in 1953. in 1953. The children look to be about 8-9 yers old. The school building does not look very French to us. The photograph given the way the children are dressed was taken during the winter, possibly in northern France. A few of the children, both boys and girls, wear smocks. Notice the girls wear patterened back-buttoning smocks. The boys mostly wear dark solid-colored smocks with the buttons set to the side. Put your cursor on the image to see the rest of the class.

Here we see a class at an unidentified French primary school. All we know for sure is that the photograph was taken in 1953. It is a mixed class. This suggests to us thst it was probably a small village school. City schools until the 1960s were often single-gender schools. The children look to be about 8-9 yers old. The school building does not look very French to us. We wonder if a number of very basic new schools were not built after World War II because of either war damage or the post-War baby boom. A school in Algeria is another possibility, although the absence of any Algerian children suyggests to us that the school is in France. The photograph given the way the children are dressed was taken during the winter, possibly in northern France. A few of the children, both boys and girls, wear smocks. Notice the girls wear patterened back-buttoning smocks. The boys mostly wear dark solid-colored smocks with the buttons set to the side. The boys wear a variety of otheroutfits. We see boys wearing short pants, knickers, and long pants. Presumably more of the boys ould have worn sdhort psnts in warmer weather. Notice the teacher is a man. This was almost always the case before the War. After the War we begin to see more lady vteachers, especially by the 1960s.
