Lycee Lamoriciere: The School

Figure 1.--Here we see the 5eme class at the Lycee Lamoriciere in 1957. This was class 5A9. The 5 means 5eme. The A means one of the 5 eme classes. There probably was also a B and C class. What we do not know is what the 9 means.

We have acquired some images from the Lycee Lamoriciere in the post-World War II period. We know virtually nothing about the history of the school at this time. About all we know is that the school was located in Oran, Algeria.Hopefully a French reader will be able to provide us more information. It looks to us to be a state secondary school. It is an all boys school. We do not know where the school was located. One thing that we do know about the school was that it was a very large school. We notice that for many grades (forms) there are more than one class. Many grades have three classes. There was an additional number associated with each class. I'm not sure what that designated. The image here shows the A class in the 5 eme year (figure 1). These boys would be 12-13 years old. At some schools the different classes in each form were formed by academic level. Often the more clever children were in the A class. We do not know if this was done at the Lycee Lamoriciere or other state lycees. We notice a site with some school photographs, but no information about the school.
