Ecole Libre Saint-François Régis: Quatrième 1 and 2

Figure 1.--Quatrième 1 and 2 was one of the junior forms. All of the boys appear to be wearing short pants, although this was probably not required by the school.

This photograph shows Quatrième 1 and 2, junior forms, at the Ecole libre Saint-François Régis about 1935. This is the fourth form, one of the junior forms. All of the boys appear to be wearing short pants, although it was not required by the school.

The Form

Saint-François Régis was called an Ecole Libre which would now be a primary school. The Ecole Libre Saint-François Régis, however, in 1935 had both junior and senior forms. This form looks to be the older boys in the junior section. The boys look to be about 13 or 14 years of age. At the time, school attendance in France was mandatory through age 14.

The photograph for Quatrième is identified as 1 and 2 . This means there were too many pupils for one class. I think the state system would have kept them in one large class. At Saint-François, however, they separated the boys into two separate classes. HBC does not know on what criteria the boys were separated. It could be the best pupils were separated in one form and the less clever boys in the other. Or it could have been done randomly. Ability grouping is presently forbidden in French schools and you theoretically cannot separate pupils by ability. Even so, it is common practice.

Figure 2.--This enlargement of the form photograph shows some details of the suits the boys are wearing. The boys all wear solid color short pants suits with kneesocks. Notice the one boy with white kneesocks. Also notice the boy wearing a sweater rather than a suit.

Clothing

The boys are mostly wearing short pants suits. I'm not sure that the boys generally wore suits to school. The suits generally seem more conservative solid color suits in comparison to the suits worn by the boys in some of the senior forms. It is a bit difficult to tell, but not all the shorts match the jackets and they appaer to be mostly knee-length. They may have dressed up especially for their class photograph. One boys wears a sweater rather than a suit. The boys all wear kneesocks. One boy wears white kneesocks. All of the boys wear lace up shoes and not sandals like some of the younger boys.
