German School Activities: Non-academic Classroom Activities


Figure 1.--We note German children in the 1920s leaning about traffic lights (figure 1). Here Berlin school children are learning traffic safety. Notice the equipment. This was obviously a formal lesson approved by the school authorities. As Berlin children walked to school, presumably authorities decided instruction in traffic saftey was needed. The children wear long stockings. The girl wears black stockings and the boy wears beige long stockings with short trousers.

Most of the images of classroom activities show Herman children involved in standard academic work. We have begun to collect classroom images of German children showing some of the activities with which they were involved. Most German teachers appear to have thought that valuavle class time should be devoted to academic sunbjects. But apparently some teachers working with younger chikldren seem to have been willing gto use classtime for different activities.
