Schoolwear Garments:  Germany during the Weimar Republic--Suits

Figure 1.--Notice in this class during the 1920s that some boys wear suits whikle others wear more casual sweaters. I am not sure what is goung on here, perhaps a class debate. The teacher appear to be at the left.

Younger boys wore a wide variety of suits to school. Many had jackets without lapels that buttoned to the collar. Corduroy seems to have been a popular material. Interestingly, sailor suits continued to be a popular style for boys, despite the bitter experience of the War. including older boys than wore sailor suits--both with short and long pants. The sailor suits seen after the War are almost all of very traditional design rather than the wide variety of styles seen before the War. Most boys that didn't wear sailor suits, however, wore short pants suits of various designs. We notice quite a wide range of headwear. This varied from Britain and America where it became increasingly rare in the 1920s for older boys to wear them. We are not sure about the cinventions involved. Soime boys may have worn a suit one day and a sweater the next. We think it was more likely that boys who wore suits to do so routinely. The impetus probably came more from the oarents than the boy, but this certainly varied form family to family. The use of neckties varied among the boys wearing suits.

I'm not sure what is gouing on here. I thought that it might be a class debate. A German reader writes, "I think the boy is likely reciting or explaining something, as it was common in Germany until the 1960s to stand up when called on by the teacher." HBC would agree if the class was in a standard arrangement. But here the students are not sitting at their desks in a classroom. Rather there is a table with some of the students including the speaker and the rest of the children are in chairs (not desks) listening to the boys in front at the table .
