Inidentified German Boy: School First Day Portraits (1928-29)

Schultüten
Figure 1.--Here we see an unidentified German boy in a first day portrait. We think he mau be a Kindergartener because of the goodie cone and long hair. Most primary school boys in the 1920s had short hair, especially primary boys. Not as short as in the 1920s, but often quite short hair. He is dressed, hiwever, rather like a first year primary boy with his school cap and book satchel. The portrait was taken in Berlin. It our contributor dates it to 1929-29.

The boy wears a school cap, white shirt, and knee pants. Note the buttins at the knee hem. These became less common in the 1930s. He wears light long stockings. They probably were a shade of tan. A German reader tells us that although the longish hair was uncommon, the school cap and satchel strongly sugges that he was beginning his first year of primsry school. She also tells us that some mothers skimped on the goodie cone and the size does not mean that he was a Kindergartener. Another reader tells us, "The strongest clue is the school cap."
