Zuckertute/Schultüten Chronology: 20th Century--The 1930s

Figure 1.--This little Berlin boy in 1934 doesn't look to happy, despite the fact that he has a nice big Zuckertute. It a little hard to see, but we note a Peter Pan collar with matching cuffs and floppy bow. These bows were becoming less common in the 1930s. It looks like the portrait was taken by a street photiographer operating outdside the school. The photographer's sign reads, "Mein erster Schulgang, Berlin, 17.April 34." This translates, "My first day at school. Literally it says My first walk to school. I am not sure if this photo was taken in 1934."

First day outfits in the 1920s were similar iun many ways to those wore in the 20s. We continue to see large numbers of children in the 1930s with their Zuckertuten for the first day od school. Theoutfits they wear are more standard and modern looking than un the 1920s. But we still sdee some of the boys in the fancy suits that were more common in the 1920s. Many boys wore suits, bit not as many as in the 1920s. We see a slight;y more informal approach toi the first day of school. Sailor suits continued to be a popular choice. Most boys wore short pants outfits. The shorts were shorter than in the 1920s, butv still tended to be relatively long. They were usually with knee socks or long stockings. High-top shoes were still common, but we see some boys wearing low-cut oxfords. We also see strap shoes and to a lesser extent sandals.
