Individual German Schools: Fredersdorf-Vogelsdorf Schule


Figure 1.-- This photo was taken in 1936 in Fredersdorf-Vogelsdorf, a village about 25 km east of Berlin. The photo shows the last grade class at the village school. It was a substantial brick building. The class has 24 children, 11 girls and 13 boys. They look abour\t 12 years old. The girls wear rather long dresses. The bots wear shirts, some with sweaters or suit jackers. All the boys wear short pants. Only two boys thst we can see wear knee socks. Two boys in front wear sandals, open-toe sandals, and one is barefoot.

A reader writes, "Interesting to me is that in 1936 the Nazis were in power and the school was only 25 km from Berlin yet none of the boys are wearing Nazi insignias etc. Maybe the area was too conservative or well off to follow the Nazis that early?" Most boys did not wear their HJ uniforms to school, but you do see a few in some of the school photographs. The HJ was just beginning to become a mass organization in 1936. Also, Berlin was not a hot-bed of NAZI support. Rhere was a large working-class population with Communist or Socialist political orientations. Berlin also had a substantial Jewish population.
