Individual German Schools: Pechern School

Figure 1.--Here we have a school in Pechern. This was a small village near the Polish border in Saxony. We do not know the name of the school. It was probably just called the Pechern School. It would have been a primary school. As Pechern was in eastern Germany, it was after World War II in the Soviet occupation zone and subsequently the Communist German Democratic Republic (DDR). We note a class portrait in 1955. Several of the children are barefoot. That is something that would have been much less common in West Germany where the German Economic Miracle was transforming the country into the prosperous center of Western Europe.

The boys here look to be wearing Lederhosen as several have halters. This does not mean, however, that they were actually wearing Lederhosen. I'm not sure if Lederhosen were popular in Saxony before the War, several German readers tell us that before the War Lederhosen were a regional garment, primarily worn in Bavaria and Austria. It is difficult to tell here because of the way the boys are sitting, but they seem o be wearing cloth short psnts rather than Ledehosen. A factor here is cost, because Lederhosen were made of leather, hey were expensive. We think that they were much more common in West Germany than East Germany. Hopefully our German readers will have some insights on this.
