Individual German Schools: Peterwitzer School--Chronology


Figure 1.--This is the Peterwitzer School in 1930. Given the salute of the boys in the back row, lmost certainly it is before 1933 or 34. The boys mosly wear short pants, often suspender shorts or shorts with suspenders. Many are barefoot. Several of the girls wear pinafores.

A reader has provided some images from the 1920s-40s. The children during this period were dressed similarly. The boys in 1925 wear short pants. We note one boy wearing fancy H-bar traps, but most wear suspenders. Many of the girls wear pinafores. The boys seem to have come to school mostly in shirts. A few boys wear jackets. The boys mostly wear short pants. We note that in 1930 most of them wear suspenders or suspender shorts. We do not, however, see many H-bar shorts. Several girls wear pinafores. Most od the children appear to be barefoot. There were changes by 1945. We see quite a number of boys wearing H-bar shorts by 1945. Also more children were wearing shoes.

The 1920s

We have a photograph of the younger boys in 1925. The boys in 1925 mostly wear collared shirts. We see both white and colored shirts. Most are buttoned to the collar. One boy wears a polo-stule shirt. The boys wear short pants, many with suspenders. . One boy wears kneesocks, but most boys are barefoot. Some boys seep to be wearing inexpensive cloth shoes.We note one boy wearing fancy H-bar traps, but most wear suspenders. Many of the girls wear pinafores. Many boys have close-cropped hair.

The 1930s

The images we have from the 1930s coe from 1930, so they may be more reflective of the 1920s than the 1930s. We do not have anu images from the mid- 30s. The photograph here was taken in 1930 (figure 1). The boys in 1930 seem to have come to school mostly in shirts. Tghey seem to be primarily white shirts. A few boys wear jackets and we also see a few boys weainh jackets. The boys mostly wear short pants. We note that in 1930 most of them wear suspenders or suspender shorts. We do not, however, see many H-bar shorts. Several girls wear pinafores. The pinafores are quite varied. We see most plain ones and colored pinafores done in stripes. Most of the children appear to be barefoot. Note how many of the girls are wearing pigtails. I do not notice a lot of ribbons on them. but it is difficult to tell. The boys have short hair, but we do not see the close cropped hair cuts common in the 1920s.

The 1940s

There were changes by 1945. We see quite a number of boys wearing H-bar shorts by 1945. Also more children were wearing shoes.
