Deutsche Schule Bukarest--2nd Grade (1960)

Figure 1.--Most boys in the 2nd grade wear short pants, but few wear the suspender shorts that were so common in the kindergarten. The boys no longer wear smocks. Some girls wear pinafores. Several are wearing their Pioneer kerchiefs. Notice that the boy ion the left has some sort of award pin.

Most boys in the 2nd grade wear short pants, but few wear the suspender shorts that were so common in the kindergarten. The boys no longer wear smocks. Pinafores are no longer as popular for the girls, but a few girls still wear them. Several children have begun to wear their pioneer uniform of light shirts and kerchiefs.

The Class

The teacher was Herr Henning. The children were:
Back row/Von oben: Zamfirescu Mihai, Diez Robert, Malleschitz Helmut, Barbasch Monika, Zamfirescu Dumitru.
Second row: Bugajewski Dan, Velovan Iulian, Solomon Mihai, Dumitrescu Florentina, Kirr Günter, Karandaj Evanghelita, Fleischer Erika
Third row: Marinescu Maria, Kutesch Else, Paunescu Veronica, Campeanu Andrei, Crasovanu Marta, Lazarescu Mihai, Purice Dan
Fourth row: Apostol Doina, Ciobanu Egon, Banner Edith, Tarchila Selma, Bell Anca, Sovar Mihaela, Lazurca Marian, Nachbar Mirela
Front row: Klein Rudolf, Dumitrascu Gheorghe, Demian Andrei, Tunner Victor.

Pioneer Kerchiefs

Several of the children appear to be wearing their Pioneer uniform of light shirts and kerchiefs. Two boy wears their kerchief with dark shirts. The children with the pioneer kerchief are a minority. I'm not sure if this is because they chose not to wear them, or perhaps they did not have them yet. I'm not sure just how a child qualified to wear a Pioneer kerchief. Hopefully one of our German readers will explain a little about the kerchiefs.

Smocks

The 2nd grade boys do not seem to be wearing smocks any longer. This contrasts with many of the kindergarten boys who did wear smocks. Clearly the smock at the Deutsche Schule Bukarest was seen as a garment for younger boys only. However HBC is not sure about what two boys are wearing in figure 2, they could possibly be wearing smocks. The girls also do not wear smocks.

Suspender Shorts and Skirts

Most boys in the 2nd grade wear short pants, at least all the boys wear we can make out what they were wearing. Few of them, however, wear the suspender shorts that were so common in the kindergarten. I only see one boy wearing suspender shorts and he does not have the horizontal crossbar. The girls also are no longer wearing suspender shirts.

Figure 2.--I'm not sire what the boy in the center is wearing, perhaps bibfront shorts. One girl wears hairbows with her pibafore. I'm also not sure what the boy on the extreme right of the photograph is wearing.

Pinafores

Three girls still wear crisp white pinafores like the kindergatren children. Only one of the girls wear white hairbows.

Sweaters

None of the children wear sweaters. It looks like the portrait was taken on a warm day.

Shirts

The boys wear a variety of colored and plaid shirts. Several are short-sleeved shirts.

Socks

Some children wear kneesocks, but many wear sandals without socks.

Footwear

The image does not show what kind of footwear the children are wearing, but some are wearing closed-toe sandals. None of these Romanian-German children, however, are wearing the open-toed sandals that were becoming popular in West Germany.

Hair Cuts

The boys all have relatively short hair cuts, A few boys have quite close cropped hair.
