German Secondary School Graduate (1920?)

German student Realschule Hauptschule
Figure 1.--Here we have a German secondary school student. He was 16 years old. The only additional information we have is that the portrait was taken in 1910, although we now think about 1920 is more likely. He may have been from Manheim. He looks to be holding a diploma which he has presumably just been awarded. He probably did not attend a gymnasium. The fact that he seems to be finishing school at about 16 years of age suggests he attended a Realschule or Hauptschule.

Notice the ornamental buttons at the knee. He also wears long black stockings. He wears a open Schiller collar. A popular style in Germany at the time. The collar is quite wide. Notice how the collar spreads over his jacket lapels.

Chronology

The only additional information we have is that the portrait was apparently taken in 1910. As I recall, the person who posted the image on the internet just said it was 1910 without saying why he thought so. It could have just been his estimate, or he might have had some better reason for specifying that date. Round numbers like 1910 are often used when estimating dates. A German reader weites, "The 1910 date here does not seem right to me. I have never seen these Schiller collars being worn that early. They are more a style from the mid-1910s and 1920s." An American reader writes, "I guess the knee pants for an older boy may have made me think the image was earlier than 1910 rather than later. Perhaps also the large collar made me think the photo was earlier also--but I am no expert on collar style, so maybe I was just wrong about that." HBC tends to think that the portrait was takennlater than 1910. We suspect that 1920 may be more likely. By this time the SDchiller collars were being worn. And short pants hd not yet replaced kneepants, especially on suits.

This is one of the wider ones we have seen.
