German School Wear during the Weimar Republic, 1930

Figure 1.--These boarding school boys wear sweaters, short pants, and kneesocks. Note their belts are worn over their sweaters.

German schools during the Weirmar Republic (1919-32) continued the general practice of not requiring uniforms. While not as common as in Britain, there were some private boarding schools in Germany. I think that several of these schools did require uniforms. I know nothing about this school, but the uniform, it looks like a photograph taken in the early 1990s. The boys look to be about 12 or 13 years old.

Uniform

The uniform the boys wear includes:
Shirts: The boys appear to be wearing a white collared shirt.
Sweater: Sailor suits were commonly what the convention wasInterestingly, sailor suits continued to be a popular style for boys, including older boys. I think quite old boys wore them, butI know they were very common for younger boys in the 1910s. They were mostly worn with kneepants in the late 19th Century and short pamts by the 1910s. Quite a wide variety of styles were available.
Sweaters:
The boys wear a solid colored sweater, slightly lighter than their shorts.
Belts: The boys wearvnarrow leater belts. Interestingly the boys wear their belts over their sweaters. Obvious this is required by the school.
Pants: The boys wear dark flannel shorts, cut much shorter than was common in the 1920s.
Socks: The boys wear solid, light-colored kneesocks. They do not appear to be turn-over-top kneesocks.
Shoes: The boys wear low-cut oxfords.

Over-belt Look

HBC has noted the fashion pictured here of wearing the bely over sweaters and smocks in other countries. French boys in the latec19th and early 20th century commonly wore belts over their smocks. HBC believes this gave a rarher military look, explaining why it was popular in the era before World War I.
