Individual Italian Schools: Mazara del Vallo (1947)

Figure 1.-- Mazara del Vallo is a fishing village on the southwestern Sicilian coast. The photo shows a second grade class in 1947. It was an all boys class. A couple boys wear the classic blur smocks wiyth white collars. These smocks may have been more common before the War. At least three children are attending barefoot. That was surely a consequence of the war, but also earlier it was quite common among fisherman families that children went shoeless. Sicily and the rest of Italy in 1947 had still not brgun to recover from the World War disaster.

We see a great deal of differences in clothing, barefoot children, children dressed in smocks. Some children barefoot, others in shoes and a few with sandals and socks. I note that only two children appear to me to be barefoot. The child on the end is wearing some sort of shoe. The two next to him are definitely barefoot and the boy in front of the teacher is also wearing shoes. (note the two boys with shoes do not appear to be wearing socks. The next three boys (all are wearing shoes or sandals). The one on the end is also wearing socks and a jacket. The boy in the second row to the right of the teacher seems to be wearing a long sleeve shirt no jacket and his shorts are worn in such a manner that he appears to be wearing striped undershorts. See the 1928 catalog page for a similar looking under shorts. My guess is that the boys wearing jackets and smocks are a little (or maybe a lot) better off than the ones who are not." Shoes are the most expensive garment and thus probably indicate a lot about a family's economic situation.
