Probably all of them belonged to working class meaning low income families, but some of the boys were very poor. Many years later one of the pupils remembered the only barefoot boy in the photo. He lived in the poorest town neighborhood, called Terravecchia. He attended the five grades of the primary school always barefoot, in both summer and in winter. After he finished school, his family emigrated to northern Italy seeking better paying jobs.
