Japanese School Tights: Age Conventions

Figure 1.--This famnily snapshot looks to be a first day school shot, meaning that he would have been about 6 years old. The phiotograph is not dated, but we would guess was taken in thed mid-1960s. . We think he attended a orivate school. These cadet uniforms were stanfard at secondatuy schools, but not at primary schools except for aome opruvate schools. We are not sdure the school required tights. Japanese schools could be quite strucy babout unfiorms, but were often fkexabke about hosiery.

Tights were especially common for the younger boys in Kindergarten and the first and second grades of primary (elementary) school. While it was most common for these younger boys to wear tights, some older boys also wore them. The only way we have of determining.this is assessing the photographic record. We haved no written material assessing this topic. It is clear from what we observerd thay boys throughout 7-8 years of age wore tights to achool. We think that this continued through about 10 years of age, but we are unable to derermine at this time just how common this was. We believe that about 10 years of age that it was not common for boys to wear tights. We continue to assess this as our Japanese archive expands.
