Japanese Private Schools (Gakuin): Kato Gaukin Elementary School--Uniform

Figure 1.-- The Kanto summer uniform is very simple and fairly standard. Boys and girls wear the same white fabric hatt with chin strap. The white shirt for the boys is worn with an open collar without a tie. The shirt is worr with blue short pants. They may have elasticised waitrs, we are not sure. The girls wear a light weight summer dress with a Peter Pan collar, another common English style. Another popular summer option at Japanese schools is a white is a sailor outfit. This we do not see in England. t the boys and girls wear white ankle socks.

The Kanto Elemenary school adopted a English style Uniform. They have a formal winter uniform and an informal, more casual summer uniform. Here is the winter uniform for Kanto Gaukin Elementary School (figure 1). It is worn October-May. The boys and girls wear the sme blue blazer and blue tie. The boy wears a white shirt, the vgirls looks like she is wearing a blouse with slightly rounded tips. The boys wea short oants and the girls skirts done in the same blue-green plaid. They also wear the same blue-green knee socks and black leather shoes. The headwear is not shown, but most private uniform schools had headwear. We suspect that there is a felt hat. Many Japanese schools had English style peaked caps in the post-War era. But even schools like Kanto with English style uniforms have moved away from the peaked caps. Many now have winter felt caps and summer favbric hats. We note minor differences. English school tended to have grey school shorts. We have never seen plaid school shorts in England, and thery are not common for regilat wear. Of course plaid school skirts are vrery common. We suspect that some schools have adopted plaid shorts for the boys becuause thaey wanted to corrordinate the outfits for the boys and girls. There is also tan =overrcoat, the same style for the boys and girls. The Kanto summer uniform is very simple and fairly standard. Boys and girls wear the same white fabric hatt with chin strap.
