Sagami Women's University Elementary School: Culture

Figure 1.--Here are the 6th grade Sagami boys parerticipating in a tea ceremony. The boys are dressed up in their suits. They are wearing white knee socks which may have been seen as a dressy touch for the occasion. We see images of the uniform in which the boys and girls are wearing grey knee socks. This may be a matter of changing school reguklations or more likely a dressy touch for the occasion. Click on th image to see some of the ceremony involved.

The School also promotes cultural traditions. One examole is the tea ceremony which is a very important cultural tradition in Japan. Japan is a very modern country in many ways. Some children learn about the tea ceremony at home or from gtandparents. But many do not. So for many of these children it was the first experience with a formal tea ceremony. Here we see boys participating in the ceremony. The boys are dressed up in their suits. They are wearing white knee socks which may have been seen as a dressy touch for the occasion. We see images of the uniform in which the boys and girls are wearing grey knee socks. This may be a matter of changing school regulations or more likely a dressy touch for the occasion. There are also girls parrticipating, both to the left and in the back. One boy writes, "From yesterday, the 6th grade has been invited by the people of the school who have taken care of us so far, and we are going to have a tea ceremony. I was nervous, and we were given tea and sweets. I got sweets. I had a tea. And I was polite to go. I was able to experience Japanese culture and make learning deeper." The boys seem more interested in the sweets than the tea, but it was the experience that was important.
