Japanese Individual Private School Uniform: Toin Gakuen

Figure 1.--This is the summer and winter uniform for the the Toin Gakuen primary school for 2019-20. Notice the hats for the boys and girls are the same, but the girls are poictured with bolero, cut-away jackets rather than blazers. For some reason in ciral and orcestral performances, the girls wear blazers like the boys. This appears to be a new stylke. Earlier the boys and girls both wore blue blazers.

Badge and Name

It is said that the phoenix dwells on the paulownia tree, and before the phoenix travels over Senri Banri, it is the paulownia tree that cultivates its power. This is the school emblem of the former system of Tokyo Higher Normal School, which was the alma mater of the Deputy Director-General (formerly Tokyo University of Education, now the University of Tsukuba).

Annual Developments

In 1964, Toin Gakuen founded. Toin Gakuen High School opened. The school moto as 'private education that public education cannot do'. At this time a high school opened. Classes are organized according to ability (proficiency level) from the beginning, and classes are provided according to ability. In 1965, a technical college (boys' school) was opened (closed in 1991. In 1966, the junior high school was opoened. in 1967, an elementary (primary) school was opened. In 1969, the kindergarten was opened. In 1981, the girls' club was established. The girls school is reffered to as aclub, because obly regular cklasses were offered. We are not sure why this was called a club, perhaps it inckuded smaller numbers thgan the boys. in 1987, the recruitment of technical colleges was suspended and Toin University of Yokohama was established. Opened the German Toin Academy in 1992 (closed in 2012). In 1988, the Memorial Hall (now: Toin Gakuen) was completed to provide students more experiences wiyh the arts. In April 2001, following the 1998 revision of the School Education Law (establishment of a "secondary school") to specialize in taking examinations at difficult universities, Toin Gakuen Junior High School, a large school (approximately 180 boys in 4 classes) were separated from high school and set up as a secondary school, Toin Gakuen Secondary School. The school building is on the same site, and in the 6th grade (3rd year of high school), classes are held jointly with high schools and girls' clubs. The facilities and grounds of the school building are shared, and uniforms are the same. In 2018-19, the school became fully coeducational.

Leadership

In 2004, Junior high and high school had adopted separate genders up to high school 2, and the secondary school had adopted a boy's school. Along with this, the recruitment of junior high schools has stopped. Shukichi Shibata, the founder and first deputy chairman of the school, also served as the president of Mitsubishi Kasei (currently Mitsubishi Chemical), chairman of the Gokei society, chairman of the Gokei school, and chairman of the Science and Technology Academy. The eldest son, Norio Shibata, who was the director of Toin Gakuen's board of directors under Director Shukichi Shibata, died in March 1977, and his second son, Hiroji Shibata, took over as his successor in October 1982. After President Shukichi Shibata died on the 2nd, Noboru Ugawa wiped out the directors since the foundation of the school and became both the director and the principal. In addition, Ugawa later became Chairman of the Myokeikai and Chairman of Myokei Gakuen as well as Shibata. Ugawa has written several books, including "Paternity Studies to Pass First-Class Schools." Died at Yokohama General Hospital on November 27, 2007 due to multiple organ failure. From June 2012, attorney Keiichi Hiraiwa will be the chairman. From April 2019, Shinichi Mizokami, a psychologist and pedagogist, will take office as chairman.

Leadership Skills

The school gives considerable attention to leadership skills. This is what the school explains about ythis effort. "Learn leadership and communication skills through various activities Toin Gakuen Elementary School." In Toin Gakuen Elementary School, in the upper grades, to gain independence and self-control, everyone has a responsible role through comprehensive learning time, clubs, and committee activities. The children's association thinks about how to manage a better school life, and the discipline committee shows the importance of etiquette in the morning greeting campaign. While the volunteer committee is doing various activities such as cleaning activities at nearby stations and the maintenance committee checking cleaning tools and equipment, not only pulling the meeting as the top, but also gathering friends and other people You will learn that cuddling is also an important quality of a leader. Career education is also provided for sixth graders to find out what occupations are in the world. In addition, I think about what kind of adult I want to be, what I need to do now, and ponder what I can contribute to in the future. By writing one's own thoughts in a sentence and giving a one-minute speech or debate, we will cultivate the communication and communication skills, and develop human resources who can play an active role as future leaders." The goal is to "Fostering "children who can think, judge, and act by themselves". All grades have a homeroom system consisting of two students, one in the primary and one in the secondary.

Curriculum

In the lower grades, we will provide highly specialized lessons with learning guidance centered on class teachers and subject teacher system of practical skill subjects and complete subject teacher system from 3rd year. In the 5th and 6th years, the national language, mathematics, and English, which tend to cause individual differences, are divided into small class groups so that students can have the “confidence” and “thinking” pleasure in “understand” classes according to their proficiency level. Develop a willingness to go to. Introducing computer learning in 1990, we aim to develop logical thinking, imagination and creativity through programming learning. Up to 4 years, English is a small class with less than 20 students, and from 5 years, lessons are organized by proficiency level. We practice the teaching of native and Japanese teachers in a well-balanced manner of the four skills of "reading, writing, speaking and listening".

Facilities

From the kindergarten to the university, Toin Gakuen has a large 344,270 m2 campus with abundant nature, all on the same site. From 3 years old, you can use the facility and experience various things. In particular, there are many links with the elementary school adjacent to the garden. There is a dedicated farm in the school, where you can grow daikon radish and sweet potatoes. In an environment blessed with nature, you can feel the changing seasons while touching flowers and insects. We notice the Toin Gakuen Sympony Hall being used not only for performances of visitiubg groups for the children to enjoy. but the children's performances. And here even the elementary children perform choral and orcestral pieces. Most iof the children atr the school learn to play an instrument.

Uniforms

The elementary school has both a winter and summer uniform. As well as what seems to be a smock-like uniform while ar school. this is a little difficult to sort out because the school seems to refer to the smocks, as best we can determine, as cardigans. Our limited Japanese language capability makes it difficult to translate the available web postings on thus. The school sites gives more attention materterial/fsbric than styling. Here we see the the new summer and ewinter uniform for 2019-20 (figure 1). We see grey blazers and bolero jsckers. Earlier the boys anfd girls wore blue blazers.

Choirs and Orchestras

We note a number of choral and orcestral performances by the older primary (elementary) children. The school is notable for having almost all the children learning a musical instrument. Not all primary schools cold put together an archestra. A choir is one thing. Most schools could do that with a teacher that had choral expertise. But an orchestra is another matter. Granted that most of the children are playing recorders or other sdimple uniform. But we also see a substantual number of children play standard orgestral uniforms. The only thing we do not see the brass instruments. There were several insdtrument groups, including accordians, cymnbals, drums/timpani, pianos, recorders, violins, and xylophones. we also see an instrument that you blow into, but has a keyboard. We are not sure what you call that, but thatand the recorder we think were for student just learning an iknstrument and probably of limited musical alent. What is amazing, it looks like to us that most of the members of the 5th and 6th grades of the elemebtary school are participating. Very impressive. Not just for tge developmeny of talent, but because thwy enable even children with limited talent to have a musical experience. Now we do not have much musical knowledge or tlaent, but the performances sounded very good yo us.
