Japanese Individual Private School Uniform: Toin Gakuen--Uniforms

Figure 1.--Toin Gauken had both a summer and winter uniform> This cjoral conmcert was given during the summer term. The boys wear their summer plaud shorts and white knee socks, but for a fornal touch the wrar their blue winter blazers, the same blazers the boy wore . This is a 5th grade group.

The Toin Gakuen elementary school has both a winter and summer uniform. As well as what seems to be a smock-like uniform while ar school. this is a little difficult to sort out because the school seems to refer to the smocks, as best we can determine, as cardigans. Our limited Japanese language capability makes it difficult to translate the available web postings on thus. The school sites gives more attention materterial/fsbric than styling. Here we see the the new summer and ewinter uniform for 2019-20 (figure 1). We see grey blazers and bolero jsckers. Earlier the boys and girls wore blue blazers.

Winter Uniform

The 2019-20 Winter style boys' blazer is grey and described as 'stylish'. Here wee see the blue lazers wore earlier (figure 1). The girls wear a bolero (cut-away) style jacket in the samne grey color. The school pounts out that the girls' bolero jacket it is the only such jacket in the prefecture. Accordung to the school, the outerwear is 'made of a stretch material that is easy to move, and the dirt that adheres to it does not get deep into the fabric. It is specially processed. The cloth is a washable type that can be washed at home. The boys wear plaid short pants. The girls' plaid skirts were done in the same material. There is a grey fely narrow-brimmed, rounded crown hat. The winter uniform was worn with dark knee socks.

Summer Uniform

The boys during the summer wear a light-blue button-down short sleeved shirt described as 'refreshing' and lighter-weight plaid short pantr. Here we see the boys wearing the lighter-weight summer shorts (figure 1). The girls beginning in 2019-20 in the summer began wearing a white bolero jacket with a light blue one-pierce summer dress made with a blend of hemp (meaning linnen) and acrylic, which has a 'sharp and cool feeling'. Both boys and gurls have rounded Peter Pan collars that the scvhool describes as 'cute'. Apparently the boys did not like these cute collars and we see insrerad pinted collars for them in the 2019-20 uniform. (figure 1). The school emphasized that the girks are dressed in cool garments. The light-weight simmer dress and with white bolero. The [lettuce?] is also pretty. Shirts and dresses are done with [deoderant?] material which can be washed at home]. Quick-drying materials varev used, no ironing is required. It is full of nice features such as cut." The school adbises, "In the summer, you can spend a cool time." There is a grey felt narrow-brimmed, rounded crown hat. The summer iniform was worn with white knee socks.

Daily Cardigan/smock Garmrent

The children while at school appear to put on smock-like garments during the school day. The children didn;t come to school in smocks, but put them on after thaey got to school. Thatb seems to be a fairly common convention. This seens to be a new development in Japanese school wear. We see it at other schools. Earlier we only see kindergartners weatring smocks. These are blue knit, a blend of wool with high heat retention and acrylic with high durability makes it convenient for body temperature control. The younger chilldren seen to be wearing a more traditional back-buttioning smock. The older children wear more of a short lab-coat type garment. At Toin Gakuen it was wirn with a collar-buttoning shirt.
