New Zealand boys wearing school shorts generally wore grey knee socks, although this is seasonal at many schools, especially on North Island. Kneesocks are one of many English-style school uniform items worn in New Zealand. While grey kneesocks in New Zealand, as in England, are the most common, colored kneesocks are worn at some schools. This is more in the Scottish tradition. Many New Zealand secondary schools have kneesocks as part of the winter uniform. Seasonal uniforms are especially common on North Island. Schools that have grey shorts normally chose grey kneesocks. Schools with blue shorts commonly choose black or dark blue kneesocks. A few schools have light-blue kneesocks. These are generally worn by older boys and do not have the colored bands at the top. As in England, New Zealand boys never wear white socks, except for cricket, because white socks, both ankle and knee socks, were generally worn by girls and thus seen as girls' socks by many boys. Often at a New Zealand coed school, the boys will wear grey kneesocks and the girls short white socks or perhaps tights, usually dark colors, in the winter.
