Figure 1.--Boys at this prep school wear caps with grey short pants suits. Notice the unuually large peak. The style of the cap in recent years has changed from a traditional peaked cap to a baseball cap. The peaks on the caps connonky worn earkier were such smaller.

The peaked school cap was widely worn in New Zealand. It was an iconic British school uniformn style that was also adopted in New Zealand. Virtually all New Zealand schoolboys, like their British counterparts, wore peaked caps as recently as the 1950s. Caps began to become notably less common in the 1960s. Both state and private secondary schools required them. A great variety of colors were used. As the fashion of wearing caps and hats wained, school capsbegan to disapear in the 1960s. They vuirtually disappearede in New Zelabnd, exceot for games. By the 1980s only a handful of private schools still required them. In the 1990s out of concern with skin cancer and the ozone hole, some schools began to reintroduce caps--often in styles resembling baseball caps or even French Legionare caps.
