Figure 1.-- An exception at the primary level was the Catholic schools which generally did have uniforms. This photo was taken at St. Joseph' Catholic school (1974). They wear the basic compulsory summer uniforms. The girls wear light-weight blue checked dresses, a popular summer style style. The boys wear light-weight grey short-sleeved shirts and grey short pants. Footwear was identical for both boys and girls, open-toe Roman sandals, a common school uniform footwear choice. .

Dargaville, also known as Takiwira in Maori, is a town located in the extreme north of North Island in a former logging area. Most New Zealand primary schools did not require uniforms, although uniforms were standard at secondary schools. An exception at the primary level was the Catholic schools which generally did have uniforms. This photo was taken at St. Joseph' Catholic school (1974). They wear the basic compulsory summer uniforms. The girls wear light-weight blue checked dresses, a popular summer style style. The boys wear light-weight grey short-sleeved shirts and grey short pants. Footwear was identical for both boys and girls, open-toe Roman sandals, a common school uniform footwear choice. Alternatively, the students could go barefoot which some of the children preferred. The uniform is basic, but the school seems to tke the uniform very seriously. All he children wear the proper uniform.
